Alaska Oil Project Receives Partial Approval

The environmental assessment recommends a smaller footprint.

The Department of the Interior has granted partial approval to “Willow,” a major oil drilling project on the North Slope of Alaska. The federal government and Conoco-Phillips are moving into the final steps of a settlement about the company’s legal right to drill.

However, the Interior Department has cited concerns about greenhouse gas emissions and impacts on wildlife. A final decision on permitting must be made in 30 days. That decision, expected in early March, rests with Interior Secretary Deb Harland, who could limit drilling or cancel the project altogether.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Secretary Haaland as she and agency officials review the drilling project.
  • For the president and his energy advisors as they consider the nation’s need for gas and fuel.
  • For U.S. conservationists as they seek to protect wildlife.
